Abstract
The aim of this study is to empirically examine the difference between male-headed households and female-headed households in the factors affecting the likelihood of poverty exit. For this goal, we used the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS) data. The KLIPS data set was subdivided into male-headed household data set and female-headed household data set. Using logistic regression technique, we analyzed the effects of a series of independent variables on the dependent variable of whether or not a household escaped from poverty and then compared the analysis results. The findings and policy implications are as follows. First, it is relatively more difficult for female-headed households to exit from poverty than male-headed households. Second, female householders are less likely to earn enough income to improve the likelihood of poverty exit even if they work. Third, unlike what has been known until now, care giving was found to be a heavy burden for male-headed households as well as female-headed households. Finally, it was found that the health condition of female householders has a significant effect on the likelihood of poverty exit implying that for the female poor, improving the accessibility to medical services can improve the chances of escaping from poverty.
